“Nafs” meaning the self in Arabic and Farsi, is a layered word in spiritual and gnostic studies that reflects the complexity and inner struggles of human beings. The starry sky formed by sacred geometry symbolizes the universe and the higher power which has a universality on a metaphysical and spiritual level that transcends all human limitations, politics, and geography. A prominent and pivotal aspect in Islam is the connection between the self and God and its intricate interconnectedness. However, as humans with limitations who are always being put to test, we are in a constant battle with our inner self, which is also known as the ego. The repetition of the word Nafs and its movement from panel to panel is a contemplation of our inner struggle to realize our relationship and unity with God and the universe and the many chances we get to repeat the process as we are faced with God’s mercy.
